Fabric and Me
As
a necessary essence of fashion designs, the choice of fabric becomes even more
critical. Since the wrong choice of materials would lead to an undesired look,
choosing textures and fabrics are the priorities for designers before
designing. Not only designers but also textures and fabrics affect all my
purchase decisions. I concluded two keywords, which are sustainability and
comfort, for my daily-wear clothes.

Opposite
to fast fashion for short-term use, sustainable fashion is eco-friendlier. As a
movement that is changing the fashion industry eco-friendlier, more brands
choose to use new types of fabrics for sustainability. Based on my research, it
is harmful to people and animals around the place where grows cotton and fibers
since the growing process requires pesticides. Sustainable brands nowadays that
use fabrics like organic cotton, linen are my top shopping favorites. Also, why
don’t we spend less money but keep on the fashion trend? With the vintage trend
became popular since last year, purchasing vintage and renewal clothes as well as bags is
becoming one of my best choices. Most vintage garments are of better quality
and more durable since they were made to last longer.

“During 2001, we realized that it was really
Free People that invoked some of our favourite images, those of femininity,
courage, and spirit. It was time to get back to our roots.” Free People’s
official website wrote. Free People is the first brands that came to my mind
when it comes to the word comfortable. The brand creates cozy and stretchy
clothes made by materials include rayon, cotton, Polyester, and Modal, etc. The
choices of fabric use meet my demand for daily wear as well as applying
fashionable elements and ideas on their pieces. I would feel more confident and
pleased while wearing high-quality clothes that is stretchable, fashionable and
fit.

I would definitely have to agree with you when you say that the choice of fabric is becoming one of the most critical parts of designing. I think that choosing the right fabric for the type of look you are imagining could be a make it or break it type of situation. I have actually been watching Next in Fashion on Netflix and each week eighteen designers are given a red-carpet concept to achieve and then are given two days to complete these looks.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I am bringing this show up, is because before they can even start working on their looks, they have to pick out the fabric that they want to work with and that can bring their creative idea to life. I think that working with fabrics is such a crucial part of any creative concept and that you did a great job explaining that in this blog.
With trends and laws that limit plastic straws and single use cups, I am surprised that more companies don’t focus on sustainability in their fabrics. Companies, one popular one being Reformation, are increasingly advertising how green they are and the lack of waste that their clothes produce. Organic fabrics that you mentioned like cotton and linen are not only better for the planet but are also usually more comfortable and breathable as well.
ReplyDeleteOn that note, comfort is also becoming a trend in all parts of fashion. Free People is extremely successful and popular because they use flowy, soft and delicate fabrics to create comfortable but fashionable pieces that people can actually wear in everyday life. Fabric can determine if things are functional in addition to them being fashionable. The points you make in this post are things that I consider when buying clothing, but have never really thought about too deeply until now after reading this blog post. It was very interesting while being informative.
I definitely agree with your point on the choice of textures and fabrics being a priority for a designer. Sustainability truly is a movement or process of fostering a transition towards the fashion industry's system of producing clothes. Sustainable fashion has emerged into an admired concept in fashion/design and we saw this throughout most 2020 runway shows. It's necessary for designers to create an eco-friendly ethic of design, while addressing social justice cases to keep audiences/shoppers aware.
ReplyDeleteOn another point, I do agree with your reference to Free People. They are emerging into an environmentally friendly, daily lifestyle brand. A lot of their work demonstrates a sustainable, yet fashionable look.
